De Staat was written between 1972 and 1976 by Louis Andriessen and premiered in 1976. The text uses parts of dialogue by Plato. Andriessen said he wrote it “as a contribution to the debate about the relation of music to politics”. This version is from 1991 by the Schönberg ensemble under Reinbert de Leeuw.
